#July4th morning walking to grab an egg for breakfast I pass my bank. The hurricane from yesterday knocked the flag down on the ground. Naturally the bank is closed and I couldn’t leave it there cause, well I live here. Do my best job to fold it and leave it somewhere they can find Monday morning that isn’t the ground. That’s probably all the patriotism America gets from me today unless Korea invades or it’s easier to get jobs.
After Google effectively put over 85% of the world’s useful information at our fingertips, human productivity exploded. College students drafting papers in hours instead of weeks, business querying prospects and competitors from board meetings, start-ups managing documents, email, phone calls from one vendor in a snap, families planning 5 years of expenses and vacations with a voice command.
Google knew this growth wasn’t sustainable. Their goal had become a meltdown of individual human progress, now they had to find someway to stop it. But they couldn’t go backwards. They could do no evil. Taking the information away would halt a monument of human achievement. If only we could slow civilization down for just hours, minutes a day. If only we could give them the right kind of information…to distract them.
Johnson burst into the board room at that moment, the sweating brows of several young geniuses whip in his direction. “GUYS, I’VE GOT IT!” Johnson spits excitedly.
"Every day we change the Google logo to link to 1 minute of reading about useless facts, and every week we put a mind numbing and simple game there! That buys us an average .38 seconds between peek hour search queries!"
The board stood and applauded. An invisible hero, Johnson saved the world from running aground on its own progress. At least for a few more precious seconds. For just a moment more…we are safe.
